Pastel Paintings

"Home at Sunset"
11" x 14" on pastel paper 2010

Home at Sunset was my first pastel. I wanted to portray a fisherman in his boat heading home in the last moments of the day on the Hood Canal.

"Peace Present"
11"x14" on pastel paper

Peace Present was created as our Christmas card in 2010.
I attempted to make the dove landing in the Poinsettias seem to be looking at the viewer, not frightened by discovering you there but descending with a purpose.

"Turning Tide"
 8"x10" on pastel paper 2011

Turning Tide was an experiment mixing a watercolor under
painting with pastels. I was imagining a blustery day on the bay with the turning tide about to overrun a shoreline sandbar and a stray rowboat.

"Morning Flight"
11"x14" on pastel paper 2011

Morning Flight was started one morning while we were staying at
our friend's beach house. I was intrigued with the morning mist and sunlight mixing in the air and water shortly after sunrise as the night mist was clearing away and the growing sunlight illuminating the water in a rising swell as a bird searches out his morning meal.

"Monday Stroll in the Park"
5"x7" approximate. pastel on sanded Wallis paper 2011

This is the first of several paintings I have planned in a series.
I am experimenting with a new variety of pastel and sanded papers.
In this first attempt, "Monday", I've created the subject image using small spots
and dashes due to the small size of the paper. The next attempt, "Tuesday" will
be larger. The image is a beautiful photo of a couple strolling near a reflecting pond
amidst the myriad colors of Fall.
